The Irwin County Indians were, as expected, the No. 6 team in the Class A playoffs when the official brackets were announced Wednesday, Nov. 14.
The Indians (7-3) finished ranked No. 5 in the Class A Public School power rankings but were pushed down the No. 6 in the brackets because region champions are ranked first. Seminole County, the Region 1-A champion, was ranked No. 7 in the power rankings.
Also as expected, Irwin will face the Trion Bulldogs in the first round, which will be held Friday, Nov. 23 at Indians Field.
Trion of Region 6-A went 8-2 this year, averaging 26 points per game and allowing 10 points per game. Trion beat AA Armuchee, AAAA LaFayette, Mt. Paran Christian, Glascock County, Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy, Gordon Lee, Christian Heritage and Whitefield Academy. The Bulldogs lost to Darlington and Mt. Zion of Carroll.
Including Irwin, four Region 2-A teams made the playoffs — No. 2 Wilcox County, No. 10 Charlton County and No. 12 Turner County. Irwin also faced No. 9 Wilkinson County in the regular season. Irwin was 3-1 against those teams.
Overall, including other classifications, Irwin faced seven playoff teams and finished 4-3 against them. Irwin faced only one team with a losing record, Lanier County.
If Irwin wins Nov. 23, its second-round opponent would be the winner of No. 3 Emanuel County Institute and No. 14 Gordon Lee. Other teams in Irwin's side of the bracket are Wilcox, No. 7 Marion County, Charlton and No. 15 Greenville. If the dominos fall correctly, Irwin could play either Wilcox or Charlton in the semifinal. If Irwin makes it to the semifinal and Wilcox does not, Irwin would host.
Teams Irwin could potentially face in the Georgia Dome for the championship are No. 1 Lincoln County, No. 4 Seminole County, No. 5 Dooly County, No. 8 Miller County, Wilkinson, Turner, No. 13 Commerce and No. 16 Hancock Central.
